Open source markdown note taking for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows, that works together with Nextcloud Notes. No need to install. Use these free online markdown editors to write and save your markdown notes. Some editors also offer real-time collaboration. Recently, one of the first truly successful startups - notes storage service Evernote - has announced major changes in their tariff plans. I will not try to analyze all possible causes of this. The importer software described on this page is still available for you to download and use, but we’re no longer actively developing or supporting this tool.

There are a zillion and one note taking apps out there, but I like how Dendron positions itself here. I’ve never had a note-taking system that I stuck with, mostly because I rarely go back and find things in my notes that are useful. Most of that’s on me, but I wonder if some of it is on my tools not making retrieval a priority…

Notes exported from Evernote via .enex files can be imported into Joplin, including the formatted content (which is converted to Markdown), resources (images, attachments, etc.) and complete metadata (geolocation, updated time, created time, etc.). Plain Markdown files can also be imported.

The notes can be synchronised with various cloud services including Nextcloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, WebDAV or the file system (for example with a network directory). When synchronising the notes, notebooks, tags and other metadata are saved to plain text files which can be easily inspected, backed up and moved around.
